Extreme Printing

Extreme Printing

Join me on this series of YouTube videos where I partner with Epson as their ambassador to print on location with the Epson P906 Printer.

Sometimes, you have one of those crazy ideas—one of those ideas you should probably forget about that you don't. When Epson asked me to review their new fine art printer, the SureColour P906. I felt like I wanted to do something different, something more interesting than the standard unboxing video. But with a deadline to produce it and a busy schedule of trips away, I filmed a simple review video in the studio.

But the idea did not go away—this one I had of taking the printer away in my VW camper and filming me printing on location. The ability to print an image in the landscape you have just photographed and hold a finished print up against that landscape. I didn't want to do this in any location; I felt it needed some additional component to become an epic adventure. So when I saw the forecast for snow while travelling between two workshops with the printer in the back of the van, I knew this was finally the opportunity I was looking for. The concept was quite simple, but in reality, it was one of the most challenging things I have ever done in photography. If the logistics of setting up a printer in a small van weren't enough, combine that with trying to film it all in the snow after a very full day shooting in the freezing cold. By the time it was completed, I felt like I was going a little crazy—when I watched back over the video, maybe I was, but it was also a lot of fun.

Wanaka

I go on a 4WD adventure to spend the night camping in the high country above Lake Wanaka. My aim is to create a huge panoramic print of the lake and surrounding mountains.

Sub-Antarctic Islands

Venture out on the stormy seas surrounding the Sub-Antarctic Islands, as I capture images during a storm and test the printer to its limits on the rolling waves.

Winter Landscapes

I head out on an adventure to the snowy Canterbury high country in my camper van to photograph the landscape and attempt to print in extreme winter conditions.
