Full-time photographic artist and educator based in Wanaka, New Zealand.

Richard Young’s work offers a fresh approach to New Zealand landscape photography, defining himself as a photographic artist who works within the landscape. His vision has evolved over years from capturing the grand vista to focusing on an emotional and expressive engagement with the landscape—creating distinctive, personal bodies of work.

While most of this work is made in New Zealand, some of his collections originate from time spent in Antarctica, Africa and England. “The location itself does not define my work—I do not seek to simply to represent–the landscape is a canvas for my expressive and emotional response”. Richard’s photographs render nature in a way you could not see with your own eyes and are “approached with an authenticity that does not break their original connection with nature”.

Richard’s landscape-focused work has won numerous international awards, from winning Best Landscape at the Banff Mountain Photography Competition in 2010 to the landscape and wildlife double win at the 2024 New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year awards..  His work has been exhibited across New Zealand, Canada, America and England in solo and group exhibitions, along with his own gallery space in Wellington for seven years until 2020.

His recognition for creating exquisitely detailed fine-art prints has led him to work as an ambassador for Epson Printers. He also works with Nikon New Zealand as an official Nikon Creator—part of a global team of visionary artists exploring new ground empowered by the Nikon system.

Richard is passionate about teaching photography; he works to inspire and extend the vision of people who join him on workshops. He has been guiding groups of photographers across New Zealand since 2010 and founded New Zealand Photography Workshops in 2013.
